What is Retinol?

Retinol is a type of Retinoid, a form of vitamin A. It’s used as an umbrella term for Vitamin A derivatives in skincare, although not all Retinoids are the same strength. Its function in our skin is to

  • Speed up cell renewal
  • Encourage growth and repair of skin cells
  • Stimulate collagen production

Would I Benefit from Retinol?

We love Retinoids because they can be used to treat a variety of different skin concerns. As they come in different forms; sensitive skins can also be benefit.

Concerned with Anti-Ageing

Retinol is an ideal skincare product for anti-ageing concerns. By speeding up skin cell renewal; skin will appear brighter and smoother with lines and wrinkles more refined. Retinol will also stimulate collagen production; improving the quality of our skin.

Prone to Acne

Retinol applied to an acneic skin prevents dead skin from clogging pores. This will prevent pore blockages which result in breakouts. By refining and smoother the skin; pore size and the appearance of scarring is reduced. Another important function is it’s ability to heal the skin through the repair of skin cells.

Pigmentation

Hyperpigmentation results from sun damage, Melasma and inflammatory damage to the skin. Using Retinol helps to resurface the skin, speeding up skin cell renewal to reduce pigmentation and brighten our skin.

Are all Retinol Products the same?

No there are different forms, they are all forms of Retinoids:

  • Retinyl Palmitate: Ideal for sensitive skin, this is the most gentle form. Products with this form will gently resurface and smooth the skin without causing side effects.
  • Retinaldehyde: This is the next step up from Retinyl Palmitate. It is still gentle enough for sensitive skins.
  • Retinol: This is the strongest over the counter, highest strength pure Retinol form. The highest strength that can be sold over the counter is 1%
  • Tretinoin: This is a prescription only form, used along with the Obagi Nuderm System

How can I use retinol?

We can advise this during your Online Consultation, ideally we start every few days eventually building up to everyday. You will not immediately use it everyday as you need to build tolerance.

It is a powerful ingredient, so it is important to use it right and make sure your skin is protected with SPF.
