How to Reduce Ageing in our 20s

What is skin ageing?

As our skin ages it loses volume, elasticity and develops lines and wrinkles. Our rate of skin renewal; where dead skin cells are shed becomes slower, meaning skin appears dull.

Collagen and Elastin (the building blocks for our skin) production slows down from our late twenties and eventually begins to break down. Because of this our skin can appear to lose volume, it begins to lose its laxity and lines and wrinkles will form and become deeper with time.

What causes ageing?

There are two types of ageing causes:

Intrinsic

Intrinsic ageing is our body’s natural ageing factors. This is made up within our genetics and makes up 10% of the overall cause of ageing. Ageing begins from our twenties. With years of expressions our skin through time due to Collagen and Elastin breakdown begins to show the effects.

Extrinsic

Extrinsic ageing is caused by external factors, these are the factors we can control. As natural ageing makes up 10% of our ageing process, we can prevent the other 90% of ageing causes!

  • Sun exposure
  • Pollution
  • Smoking
  • Diet
  • Poor skin maintenance

Sun exposure

UV rays continue to damage our skin cells even after exposure. Our bodies have pigment producing skin cells called Melanocytes, they produce the pigment melanin. Melanin is responsible for our skin colouring.

When we expose our skin to the sun, melanin is produced. Our bodies can over produce in some areas causing pigmentation from sun damage. As well as pigmentation UV rays break down Collagen and Elastin fibres, causing lines, wrinkles and volume loss.

Pollution

Pollution causes skin ageing by compromising the skins natural protective barrier and causing free radical damage. This damage results in breaking down of Collagen and Elastin.

Smoking

Smoking speeds up skin ageing due to inhalation of toxins causing damage to Collagen and Elastin fibres. This results in deep lines and wrinkles.

Diet

A diet high in sugar damages skin through Glycation. The sugar will cause a process called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) to further develop, the process where excess sugar binds to Collagen and Elastin fibres. The more sugar you eat, the more damage you can do.

Poor Skin Maintenance

We need to look after our skin to keep it healthy. This means protecting it from harmful external factors and nourishing it in order to repair.

What can I do to improve my skin?

In our twenties, Collagen and Elastin production slows down, we will begin to see fine lines starting to form. Prevention is key in this age group. Treatments to gently resurface the skin, collagen boosting treatments with preventative skincare.

Treatments

Microdermabrasion combined with Epionce Lite Refresh Skin Peel

Microdermabrasion uses a vacuum with crystals to exfoliate, by combining with Epionce Lite Refresh; a gentle brightening skin peel that exfoliates dead skin cells to reveal a brighter, smoother complexion. Using 30% Malic Acid and 5% Salicylic Acid, it is more gentle than other skin peels.

LED Light Therapy

LED Light Therapy Explained

Light Emitting Diode technology uses different wavelengths to treat different skin conditions. Each wavelength (depth of skin penetration) creates a different coloured light. To stimulate collagen production we use the Red Light combined with a bee venom mask (natures botox!) to plump the skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Treatment time 45 minutes.
