What is Skin Ageing?
As our skin ages it loses volume, elasticity and develops lines and wrinkles. Our rate of skin renewal; where dead skin cells are shed becomes slower, meaning skin appears dull.
Collagen and Elastin (the building blocks for our skin) production slows down from our late twenties and eventually begins to break down. Because of this our skin can appear to lose volume, it begins to lose its laxity and lines and wrinkles will form and become deeper with time.
What causes ageing?
There are two types of ageing causes:
Intrinsic ageing is our body’s natural ageing factors. This is made up within our genetics and makes up 10% of the overall cause of ageing. Ageing begins from our twenties. With years of expressions our skin through time due to Collagen and Elastin breakdown begins to show the effects.
Extrinsic ageing is caused by external factors, these are the factors we can control. As natural ageing makes up 10% of our ageing process, we can prevent the other 90% of ageing causes!
- Sun exposure
- Poor skin maintenance
UV rays continue to damage our skin cells even after exposure. Our bodies have pigment producing skin cells called Melanocytes, they produce the pigment melanin. Melanin is responsible for our skin colouring.
When we expose our skin to the sun, melanin is produced. Our bodies can over produce in some areas causing pigmentation from sun damage. As well as pigmentation UV rays break down Collagen and Elastin fibres, causing lines, wrinkles and volume loss.
Pollution causes skin ageing by compromising the skins natural protective barrier and causing free radical damage. This damage results in breaking down of Collagen and Elastin.
Smoking speeds up skin ageing due to inhalation of toxins causing damage to Collagen and Elastin fibres. This results in deep lines and wrinkles.
A diet high in sugar damages skin through Glycation. The sugar will cause a process called Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) to further develop, the process where excess sugar binds to Collagen and Elastin fibres. The more sugar you eat, the more damage you can do.
Poor Skin Maintenance
We need to look after our skin to keep it healthy. This means protecting it from harmful external factors and nourishing it in order to repair.
In our 30s and 40s we start to see the effect of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGE’s), this happens when Glucose (sugar) molecules attach to Collagen and Elastin fibres causing a break down of these fibres, resulting in deeper lines forming.
Skin Ageing in our Forties
With deeper lines and wrinkles now taking place we become more concerned with skin ageing and how to reverse it. Correction products are key, we want to reduce wrinkle depth, boost Collagen and treat any damage to the skin whilst protecting against further damage.
Laser Skin Tightening
A step up from our Laser Facial, by heating the skin at a deeper depth we can stimulate collagen production to tighten collagen fibres, reducing lines and wrinkles whilst improving overall skin tone. Treatment time 45 minutes. No downtime.
Microneedling with the Dermicapen works by causing micro ‘trauma wounds’ to the skin to encourage the production of collagen. Collagen is our bodys building blocks. Collagen production will start throughout the treatment but as our skin takes 4 weeks on average to renew we start to see results after this time.
We use collagen stimulating products such as Hyaluronic acid throughout the treatment to increase results. Skin will feel like a mild sunburn after so to finish off we apply a bio cellulose mask to promote healing and further absorption of serums. Treatment time 1 hour 15 minutes. Downtime of 1-2 weeks.
Obagi Blue Radiance Skin Peel
With 20% Salicylic acid, combined with Glycolic and Lactic acid, this peel removes dead skin cells in order to reveal a smoother brighter complexion. Fine lines and wrinkles are reduced. Treatment time 40 minutes.
Anti-wrinkle injections can reduce expression lines around the eyes and forehead. Dermal fillers can be used to treat deeper lines that may have formed on the upper lip, nose to mouth lines and can be used to add volume in areas that have lost volume like the jaw line.
Dermaquest Peptide Glyco Cleanser
With 15% glycolic acid, peptides and lactic acid; this treatment cleanser smoothes and gently resurfaces skin.
Skinceuticals Phloretin CF
With 10% L Ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C) Phloretin CF provides advanced protection against free radical and environmental damage. Phloretin derived from green apples helps to improve skin tone and reduce hyperpigmentation.
Dermaquest B3 Youth Serum
Main ingredient vitamin B3 (niacinamide) repairs skin’s natural barrier whilst firming and hydrating. B3 evens skin tone and reduces sebum production. Antioxidants also help to repair environmental damage.
Agera Microderm RX system
A 2-part system to exfoliate the skin. Step 1 uses vitamin C crystals to buff away dead skin cells whilst step 2 is an activator with lactic acid to gently dissolve the crystals and dead skin to reveal a smoother complexion.
Obagi Elastiderm Eye Cream
Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, encourages the production of Collagen and Elastin. Blueberry extract provides antioxidant protection against free radical damage.
This oil free SPF provides high protection from UV damage whilst added Fernblock provides added protection against the environment.
