Preventing Skin Damage

When we talk about prevention in skincare, we are talking about antioxidants. By using an antioxidant serum daily, we prevent our skin becoming damaged. Antioxidants protect our skin from free radical damage. Free radicals are generated in our skin from the environment (pollution, UV rays, smoking) as well as HEV- blue light damage from our devices! Antioxidants neutralise free radicals, preventing skin cell damage.

When we talk about antioxidants, vitamin C comes to mind- although it is just one of many antioxidants that can offer our skin protection.

Five of the Best

  • Vitamin A (retinol)
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Resveratrol
  • Green Tea (polyphenols)

Benefits of Antioxidants

Prevent Environmental Damage

Using an antioxidant product daily, protects our skin from free radical damage. When skin is damaged by the environment and pollutants, our skin barrier becomes impaired. This can cause inflammation which can trigger other skin conditions such as pigmentation and acne.

Reduces inflammation

Inflammation can be caused by environmental damage, by preventing this damage, we can reduce inflammation. Antioxidants Vitamin A and C can both repair our skin, further reducing inflammation.

Enhance the Protection Provided by SPF

Antioxidants further increase the protection of broad spectrum SPFs. Antioxidants provide added protection against damaging UV rays whilst also protecting against Infra Red rays and HEV (blue light damage).

Prevent and Correct Signs of Ageing

Antioxidants protect us against external factors that cause 90% of skin ageing. Vitamin A encourages skin cell renewal, this process often slows down as we get older. By smoothing and refining our skin, lines and wrinkles are reduced. Another antioxidant, Vitamin C; brightens and stimulates collagen production, whilst Vitamin E nourishes our skin. Other antioxidants such as Resveratrol can even repair skin damage.

May Help Protect Against Skin Cancer

Exposure to UV rays are one of the main factors causing skin cancer. As we know antioxidants help to prevent damage within our skin from UV rays, they may actually be able to help protect us from skin cancer.
