A Hand-y Skin Care Guide

Your skin is your largest organ; it needs moisture and nourishment to be healthy and grow. Normal, healthy skin is coated in a thin layer of natural lipids, or fatty substances. They keep in moisture, leaving the skin soft and supple.

Your hands not only are susceptible to the first signs of aging, but very often age even faster than the face because the skin on the back of the hand is much thinner than that on your face. There is very little fat on the backs of the hands, so when even a small amount of collagen or elastin fibers begins to break down – which is part of the normal aging process and partly from sun exposure – it’s going to have a noticeable impact on your hands.

Hands really need more moisture than any other part of the body because they are exposed to the elements more, all year long, plus you wash them frequently, which also tends to cause a loss of the skin’s protective oil mantle.

Without proper care the skin on hands can become wrinkly with a crinkly crepe-like skin texture and depending on how much sun exposure you had as a child and young adult, aging also brings out brown spots, known as liver spots. This pigmentation gives away your age and can be an annoyance.

In essence you should be applying the same skincare concepts to the skin on your hands as you do to your face – cleanse, exfoliate, protect from the sun and keep hydrated. Below we’ve highlighted some treatments & products specifically aimed at handcare:

Laser treatment is very effective at reducing and removing pigmentation on hands caused by age and sun damage. Typically a course of 3 sessions is needed over a period of 3-4 months, prices start from £60 per session.

Light Therapy Treatment uses narrow wavelength red light to boost collagen within the skin, naturally plumping out fine lines & wrinkles and restoring volume. Sessions are priced at £50 each.
